Indonesia and Cambodia to Strengthen Cooperation in Combating Transnational Crimes

Phnom Penh, May 14 (AseanAll)  — Dr. Santo Darmosumarto the Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, to discuss efforts in strengthening bilateral cooperation, including in combatting transnational organized crimes on May 14, 2024.

Darmosumarto expressed his appreciation for the Cambodian Government's continued support and assistance in efforts carried out by the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh to facilitate the needs and protect Indonesian citizens living in Cambodia. Such support also ensured the successful organizing of Indonesia's General Elections last February, which took place in Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Poipet, Chrey Thum and Bavet.

In addressing transnational organized crimes, particularly trafficking in persons, cyber crimes, and drug trafficking, Darmosumarto applauded the cooperation among relevant agencies in both countries, especially the Cambodian National Police and the General Department of Immigration. Sar Sokha acknowledged that these agencies have actively responded to reports from Indonesian citizens victimized by such crimes.

According to statistics provided by the Cambodian authorities, there could be around 100 thousand Indonesian nationals residing in Cambodia. This is a dramatic increase, when considering that before Covid-19 there were only around 2.000 Indonesia living in Cambodis. They work in jobs ranging from hotel staff to cyber engineers to restaurant owners.

Indonesia also stands ready to share its experience and expertise in addressing the threat of international terrorism. There is also potential for concrete cooperation in combatting drug trafficking and cybercrime, as both countries work together to ensure stability and peace in the region. This is important if Southeast Asia is to remain as the engine of global economic development.

As both nations strive for development and prosperity, cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia is pivotal in fostering a safe and conducive environment for growth. By working hand in hand, Indonesia and Cambodia reaffirm their shared commitment to combatting transnational crimes and safeguarding the interests of both countries.
