Bangkok, April 2 (AseanAll) — On April 1, 2026, at Gaysorn Urban Resort, in Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul attended a reception to celebrate the 170 th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Thailand and United Kingdom, which also coincides with the 80 th anniversary of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT). The event was also attended by Mark Gooding, Ambassador of UK to Thailand, BCCT representatives, and honorary guests from both countries, an approximate of 300 participants.

At the reception, the Prime Minister delivered the opening remarks to express his pleasure in celebrating tight-knitted relations between Thailand and the United Kingdom, which has developed over the past 170 years. What special in the relations lies not only in its longevity, but also in the ability of both nations to adapt, develop, and continuously generate mutual benefits.

The United Kingdom has long been Thailand’s key partner in its development endeavor. British companies have played an important role in the Thai economy through investment, knowledge transfer, and the establishment of long‑term cooperation with Thai businesses and agencies on the basis of trust, credibility, and close collaboration.
At the same time, Thai businesses have expanded their investments in the United Kingdom, creating jobs, supporting the local economy, and reinforcing the bonds between the peoples of both nations. This partnership is not limited to economic cooperation, but extends into other dimensions such as sports. Thailand’s investment in Leicester City Football Club has become a source of shared pride. It demonstrates that partnership between the two countries can flourish across diverse fields.
According to the Prime Minister, while Thailand and the United Kingdom are looking back on past achievements, it is also necessary to look ahead. Situated in a region of dynamic economic growth, Thailand is preparing for future opportunities by fostering an environment conducive to stable and sustainable business expansion. The United Kingdom is regarded as Thailand’s key partner in this endeavor. Elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership and Enhanced Trade Partnership two years ago also serves as a vital foundation for future cooperation.

The two countries should further advance close collaboration with the goal of establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to pave ways for more trade and investment opportunities, while expanding cooperation in other sectors in a more comprehensive and tangible manner. If the past 170 years have been a time of building mutual trust, then the next 170 years must be a time of jointly shaping the future. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Thailand and the United Kingdom will achieve this shared vision together through the cooperation of all sectors from both nations, especially those that are present here today.
