Indonesian Foreign Minister Emphasizes the Importance of Constructive ASEAN Approach in Resolving the Myanmar Crisis

Cebu, January 28 (AseanAll)  — On 28 January 2026 Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono attended the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus. This meeting was part of the series of ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat (AMM Retreat) held in Cebu, Philippines.

In this meeting, the Philippines’ Secretary of Foreign Affairs, as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, provided a briefing on the latest developments of the situation in Myanmar. The meeting thoroughly discussed the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as well as ASEAN's future work priorities in efforts to resolve the crisis.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister emphasized that the situation in Myanmar is a significant challenge to ASEAN's resilience and credibility. " It (the Special Envoy’s visit to Myanmar) signals ASEAN’s firm commitment to keeping Myanmar’s reconciliation a top priority," stressed the Minister. Stemming from the shared commitment to create peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, ASEAN is expected to continue engaging constructively and consistently in supporting the peace process in Myanmar.

In particular, Indonesia conveyed its appreciation for the efforts of the Philippines’ Secretary of Foreign Affairs, who has held meetings with various parties in Myanmar. This step is assessed as a relevant and tangible contribution.

Going forward, measurable and creative efforts are needed to build lasting and inclusive stability, as well as a solid foundation for Myanmar's nation-building process.

As a concrete form of commitment, Indonesia expressed its readiness to facilitate inclusive dialogue with all relevant parties in Myanmar. "Indonesia is also open to offering practical support, including sharing our valuable experience in nation-building, reconciliation processes, and the implementation of regional autonomy," Minister Sugiono concluded.
