Thai Prime Minister clarifies Thailand-Cambodia situation to U.S. President

Bangkok, December 13 (AseanAll)  — On the evening of December 12, 2025,  at Thai  Government House, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul had a phone conversation with President Donald Trump of the United States.

Engaging in the conversation were Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun, Prime Minister’s Secretary General Traisulee Traisoranakul, and Government Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat.

According to the Prime Minister, the conversation went well. President Trump expressed concern over the Thailand-Cambodia situation and his hope for everything to return to the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur. The Prime Minister affirmed Thailand’s full compliance without ever deviating from the signed Declaration. On the contrary, Cambodia has violated the agreement, resulting in the loss of Thai people’s lives, organs, and their properties, and prompting Thailand to respond to defend its sovereignty, territory, properties and the lives of the Thai citizens. He reiterated that Thailand’s actions were simply defensive.

The American President expressed understanding and stated that the Thai Foreign Minister may directly communicate with the U.S. Secretary of State any time, and the Prime Minister may do so with the President, should such an incident reoccur. The Prime Minister added that the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has regularly held discussions with the U.S. counterpart at different levels.

President Trump also hoped for a ceasefire, on which the Prime Minister urged the President to say so to the Cambodian side. Cambodia needs to announce to the world of its decision to cease fire, withdraw forces, and completely remove the landmines it had laid, as these new landmines placed by the Cambodian side have gravely injured and killed the Thai soldiers. In the AOT written statement, it is confirmed that these landmines are newly planted. This is a clear evidence that Cambodia has been the one who violate the signed Declaration. The violating party must, therefore, be the one to rectify the situation, not the party that was victimized.

Regarding the issue of reciprocal tariff, President Trump committed that Thailand would receive a better tariff rate. The Prime Minister emphasized that this issue was raised by the President himself, and he did not pressure nor linked the issue to the Thailand-Cambodia situation, which is a positive sign. The Minister of Commerce will bring up the issue discussed this time in the future negotiations with the U.S. counterpart.

The Thai Prime Minister reiterated that no party wishes for losses, but the Thai Government will not allow anyone to violate its sovereignty, territory, and the safety of its people. As long as he is the Prime Minister of Thailand, he would not tolerate the Thai people being harmed, violated, or shot by the opposing side.
