(AseanAll) — Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, underlined the importance of global cooperation in addressing the Rohingya crisis. Sugiono delivered this message at the High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar during the 80th UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters, in New York, on September 30,2025.
Sugiono stressed that the Rohingya’s tragedy is inseparable from the broader Myanmar crisis. “A comprehensive solution can only be achieved by addressing the root causes through inclusive dialogue, in line with the Five-Point Consensus,” Sugiono stated.
Sugiono also highlighted the vulnerability of the Rohingya people, who are increasingly being exploited by transnational criminal networks, including those involved in human trafficking and people smuggling. Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia will continue to take firm action against such criminal groups but confirmed that no single country can act alone. “ASEAN and the Bali Process must continue to be strengthened as regional platforms to address irregular migration and protect vulnerable communities,” he affirmed.
Furthermore, Sugiono called for stronger international cooperation, including close coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to provide sustained support for countries hosting refugees. Indonesia specifically urged State Parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention, especially developed countries, to widen access for refugees through third-country resettlement programs.
“For eight years, Rohingya refugees have lived in uncertainty. We must not allow this to turn into decades of despair. The international community must share responsibility,” Sugiono concluded.
The High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya was convened under the mandate of UNGA Resolution 79/182 to mobilize political support and to discuss concrete, innovative, and measurable action plans focusing on human rights protection while paving the way for voluntary, safe, and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
