Philippine President: PH joins Interim Observer Group to monitor Cambodia-Thailand border ceasefire

(AseanAll)  — Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on September 9, 2025 said the Philippines will deploy representatives to the Interim Observer Group that was created to monitor the implementation of ceasefire in the Cambodia-Thailand border region.

During the Kapihan with the Media in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at the end of the three-day State Visit, Marcos said the deployment of Filipino observers was part of the Philippines’ commitment to assist the two parties in the observance of the ceasefire agreement.

The Philippines’ offer of assistance was among the issues discussed during President Marcos’ bilateral meetings with Cambodian leaders during the State Visit.

“Paulit-ulit naming sinasabi basta’t ang Pilipinas at saka ‘yung ASEAN nandito kami upang tumulong. At dahil pareho kayong kaibigan namin, we are friends with both Cambodia and Thailand, we are all members of ASEAN, ayaw natin makikita na nagkakaproblema ang mga member states of ASEAN,” the President said during the news conference.

“Kaya naman lagi kong pinapaliwanag na the Philippines is ready to play any role that will be of assistance to strengthen the ceasefire.”

Deadly armed clashes erupted between Cambodian and Thai soldiers in the border region late July, resulting in deaths and injuries to both military personnel and civilians, and displacing tens of thousands from communities living on the border.

ASEAN Chair Malaysia has organized an Observer Group consisting of representatives from the member-states to monitor the ceasefire along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Marcos said from the original plan to deploy one or two, the Philippines will now send five representatives to the observer group.

The ceasefire agreement was signed on August 8, 2024 by the Defense Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand.
