Jakarta, July 24 (AseanAll) — Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda urged increased investment in science, technology, and innovation to drive inclusive and sustainable growth in Southeast Asia during his keynote address at the 9th Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum ASEAN–Japan Conference in Jakarta.
"ASEAN is home to extraordinary potential," said Mr. Kanda. "Countries that innovate are countries that thrive. By connecting ideas with resources and leveraging platforms like the STS Forum, we can create opportunities that reach every community."
Mr. Kanda said innovation must remain central to regional strategies. He outlined opportunities to build resilient food systems, modern energy networks, and smart cities to improve lives across the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He also underscored the importance of regional cooperation, increased investment in research and development, and partnerships with the private sector to close technology gaps and advance inclusive prosperity.
Mr. Kanda identified three priorities: modern and interconnected energy systems, resilient food systems, and smart, inclusive cities. He reaffirmed that ADB will provide up to $10 billion for the ASEAN Power Grid in the next 10 years and $40 billion for food systems transformation by 2030, along with significant support for sustainable urban development, digital connectivity, and innovation.
In Indonesia, Mr. Kanda also visited ADB-supported projects in Lombok, including an irrigation initiativeby women-led water user associations to enhance food and water security, and a solar farm built by Vena Energy, a leading renewable energy producer, highlighting ADB's support for Indonesia's energy transition and private sector investment.
