Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen: 30-Year Family Ties with Thaksin Shinawatra Severed Over Leaked Call

Phnom Penh, June 20 (AseanAll)  — Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has expressed his sadness that the relations between his family and that of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra were severed due to a leaked phone call.

“Over 30 years of heartfelt bonds between our two families were shattered by the leak of a phone conversation by a Cambodian official, who was angered by insults directed at me and the Cambodian Prime Minister, claiming we were unprofessional,” he wrote in a social media post on the afternoon of June 20,2025.

Hun Sen recalled that during the official visit of the Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Cambodia in April 2025, aside from the official agenda, they also had a family gathering, where the Thai Prime Minister Ung Ing (Paetongtarn Shinawatra) and her husband dined at his residence.

Before departing, the Thai Prime Minister requested to see the rooms where her father Thaksin Shinawatra and aunt Thaksin Yingluck had once stayed. “My house had preserved two rooms for them. One was named the ‘Thaksin Room’ and the other the ‘Yingluck Room.’ The Thai Prime Minister’s husband took photographs and videos of both rooms,” Hun Sen added.

Both Hun Sen and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra have confirmed the authenticity of a recent leaked audio recording of their phone conversation.

According to Hun Sen, the call took place on the evening of June 15, 2025, lasting 17 minutes and 6 seconds, with Phnom Penh Deputy Governor Khleang Huot serving as interpreter.
