Indonesian Red and White Flag Raised in Manila: Marking Indonesia’s Official Transition to WHO Western Pacific Region

Manila, June 11 (AseanAll)  — Amid light rain blanketing the city of Manila, Philippines, a strong sense of national pride radiated during the Flag-Raising Ceremony of the Indonesian Red and White Flag at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) in Manila, held on 11 June 2025.

The ceremony marked the symbolic and official transition of Indonesia’s membership from the WHO South-East Asia Region (SEARO) to the Western Pacific Region (WPRO).

The event was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Philippines, Agus Widjojo, along with officials and staff of the Indonesian Embassy in Manila. They were warmly welcomed by the Regional Director of WPRO, Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, together with WPRO officers and staff.

Despite the rain, the ceremony proceeded solemnly and meaningfully. A round of enthusiastic applause filled the room as the Indonesian Ambassador and his delegation entered, reflecting the warm reception and enthusiasm of the WPRO community.

In his remarks, Dr. Piukala welcomed Indonesia’s presence at WPRO, stating that this transition reflects Indonesia’s strong commitment to global solidarity and regional cooperation. He expressed confidence that, with its experience and innovation, Indonesia would quickly adapt and make a meaningful contribution to the region.

In his address, Ambassador Agus Widjojo conveyed the Government of Indonesia’s appreciation to the WPRO Secretariat for its full support throughout the transition process. He affirmed that the Indonesian Embassy in Manila stands ready to serve as a bridge for close communication and cooperation between Indonesia and WHO WPRO, in support of Indonesia’s active role in the region.

Indonesia’s transition from SEARO to WPRO was previously agreed by consensus by all WHO Member States during the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 23 May 2025. The decision was based on several considerations, including epidemiological factors, alignment of health issues, and geographic proximity to countries in the Western Pacific region.

This strategic step underscores Indonesia’s position as an active partner in global health diplomacy and further strengthens its role in supporting regional and global health systems.
