Laos Makes Strides in Foreign Debt Repayment

Vientiane, June 10 (AseanAll) — Demonstrating economic resilience and strengthened fiscal discipline, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic has repaid US$533.58 million in foreign debt during the first five months of 2025, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone announced at the 9th Ordinary Session of the 9th National Assembly held on June 9,2025,according to Lao News Agency KPL.

The high-level session, attended by Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, Lao National Assembly President Xaysomphone Phomvihane, senior government officials, invited guests, and lawmakers from across the country, highlighted significant progress in the implementation of the government’s socio-economic development plan.

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay reported that Laos has made steady headway in meeting both domestic and external financial obligations. The foreign debt repayment accounts for 29.38% of the annual target, while 2,301 trillion kip in domestic debt has been settled, representing 13.54% of the yearly plan.

These milestones, he emphasized, reflect the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding financial stability, enhancing international credibility, and positioning Laos as a responsible economic partner in the global arena.
