Dili, May 29 (AseanAll) — Timor-Leste President and Nobel Peace Laureate J. Ramos-Horta embarked to Singapore from May 29 to June 4, 2025, to participate in the 22nd Asia Security Summit, known as the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue.
The Summit, widely recognized as the premier forum for defense and security dialogue in the Asia-Pacific region, brings together senior government officials, defense ministers, and security experts from across the globe to address critical regional and international security challenges.
Ramos-Horta will deliver a keynote statement during the Third Plenary Session on “Managing Proliferation of Risks in the Asia-Pacific,” where President will present Timor-Leste’s perspective on nuclear weapons and missile technology proliferation across the region.
The President will also participate in the Young Leaders’ Presidential Roundtable, sharing opening reflections on the role of strategic partnerships in strengthening the regional security architecture in the Asia-Pacific and subsequently responding to questions raised by the young leaders present.
Ramos-Horta will conduct bilateral meetings with Singapore’s leadership, including Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore, Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore, and Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Minister of Defense.
Ramos-Horta will also attend various plenary sessions covering critical topics such as Indo-Pacific security, cyber and outer-space defense challenges, and China’s global security partnerships.
“This participation reflects Timor-Leste’s growing engagement in regional security affairs and its commitment to contributing constructively to Asia-Pacific stability. As a nation that has successfully transitioned from conflict to peace with international support, Timor-Leste offers valuable insights on conflict resolution, peace-building, and democratic development,” stated Ramos-Horta.
The summit will feature multiple plenary sessions, special addresses, and simultaneous working sessions covering defense innovation, regional crisis management, and maritime security cooperation. The Summit concludes with discussions on enhancing security cooperation for a stable Asia-Pacific.
Ramos-Horta is expected to return to Timor-Leste on June 4, 2025.
