(AseanAll) — Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) held on May 25, 2025, in the lead-up to the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.
In the AMM meeting, Sugiono emphasized the importance of ASEAN's cohesiveness and durability in facing geopolitical tensions and global economic fragmentation. "The credibility of ASEAN will depend on its ability to maintain peace and stability in the region," said Sugiono.
In the meeting, Sugiono emphasized the importance of renewing ASEAN's commitment to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), which serves as the foundational basis for the peace architecture in the region. Foreign Minister Sugiono urged ASEAN to take substantive steps, not just procedural ones, especially in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the TAC next year.
Regarding ASEAN's relations with ASEAN partners, Sugiono also emphasized the importance of maintaining ASEAN's relevance and centrality amidst various external partnership initiatives. Therefore, Indonesia encourages the adoption of the ASEAN Decision on Enhancing Relations with External Partners, which will serve as a guide in strengthening ASEAN's external relations with its partners. "ASEAN needs focused partnerships and must remain within the ASEAN-led corridor," added Sugiono.
Regarding the discussion on Timor-Leste's full membership, Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's full support for the adoption of guidelines for the accession of ASEAN legal instruments by Timor-Leste.
"Timor-Leste has shown real progress." "This process must be practical, supportive, and accelerate integration, not hinder it," said Sugiono.
Sugiono also called for solidarity and ongoing technical assistance from all ASEAN member states to support Timor-Leste's journey to become the 11th member of ASEAN.
Regarding the issue of Myanmar, Sugiono reiterated that the crisis in Myanmar has become a serious threat to stability in the region. Therefore, Sugiono urged the implementation of measures to stop the violence and create conditions for inclusive dialogue. "Because the cost of doing nothing is very high, we must unite to help Myanmar create peace, which is Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned," concluded the Foreign Minister, wrapping up his statement.
The AMM meeting this time was attended by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, East Timor, and the ASEAN Secretary-General. The Myanmar delegation was represented by a non-political representative. At this meeting, the Addendum to the SEANWFZ Treaty was adopted.
