Kuala Lumpur, May 27 (AseanAll) — Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reiterated that the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte is a matter for the Senate and the House of Representatives to address, emphasizing that he has no involvement in the proceedings, according to the Presidential Communications Office of the Philippines.
In a media interview following the 46th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia on the night of May 27, 2025, the President added that he has consistently made clear his position against pursuing any impeachment.
“How many times do I have to say that? I didn’t want impeachment,” Marcos said.
The President noted that the impeachment complaints were initiated by groups not aligned with the administration.
“Lahat ng kakampi ko sa Kongreso hindi nag-file ng impeachment complaint. ‘Yung mga nag-file ng impeachment complaint, hindi mo masasabing kaya kong utusan o pagsabihan na ito ‘yung gagawin mo,” President Marcos said.
“So, why do I have to keep explaining that I didn’t want impeachment?” the President added.
Marcos emphasized that the impeachment process falls under the jurisdiction of Congress, with the Senate acting as the impeachment court and the House of Representatives serving as the prosecution panel.
The Office of the President is part of the executive branch, while the Senate and the House belong to the legislative branch, both of which are co-equal under the Constitution.
“They (Congress) will have to decide between the two Houses how they are going to conduct this,” the President said, recalling he was a senator during the impeachment trial of the late Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona in 2012.
“We were making rules as we went along. And I think that’s what will happen here, too. So, we’ll see what happens,” said the President.
