On August 5th,2023, there was a conflict between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea. China Coast Guard(CCG) vessel used a water cannon against a Philippine boat, prompting condemnation and protest from the Philippines.

China Coast Guard said that two Philippine transport and repair ships and two Philippine maritime police ships illegally entered the waters adjacent to Ren'ai Reef(PH calls it Ayungin Shoal) in the the Nansha Islands without the approval of the Chinese government. China Coast Guard have implemented necessary controls in accordance with the law and stopped ships carrying illegal building materials in the Philippines.

On August 8th, the China Coast Guard released an on-site video stating that at around 9:40 am on August 5th, 2023, the Chinese Coast Guard ship 5201 conducted a warning water cannon spray on the Philippine yacht "Yunaza May 2", maintaining rational restraint throughout the entire process.
