Phnom Penh,November 21 (AseanAll) — Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, reiterated the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)’s high attention to the national sovereignty on November 21,2024.
The Premier made the reaffirmation while presiding over the graduation ceremony of over 8,000 students of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, in response to reactions on social media and broadcasting platforms over border issue with Thailand.
“Thinking about national interests is important, but we must understand when to do what. […] Let me explain why the RGC remains calm, it’s because the RGC has political maturity and responsibility to the nation and the people in defending territorial integrity and national sovereignty […],” he said.
Hun Manet said that there are a lot of comments and criticisms on Koh Kut issue in Thailand, but the RGC does not bring fire into its [own] house.
Regarding the border demarcation, Cambodia and Thailand have been started their negotiations since 2006, and but they have not yet ended, both for land and sea borders.
Hun Manet explained that the RGC has been settling the border issue based on official mechanism, not on Facebook platform or on media mechanism.
The official resolution mechanism is the mechanism agreed by the Royal Governments of Cambodia and Thailand, i.e. Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and Joint Technical Committee (JTC), he said.
On sea border, Hun Manet added, both sides have not yet gotten any resolution yet, even after many negotiations, but for land border of 805 kilometres long with 74 border markers based on the French-Siamese Treaty in 1907, the two neighbours have already agreed on 42 border markers.
