Timor-Leste Accedes to the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty

Kuala Lumpur, October 25 (AseanAll)  — Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, on October 25, 2025 joined other Foreign Ministers in witnessing a historic moment, where the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste formally acceded to the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

The Instrument of Accession was deposited with Thailand, the Depositary State of the SEANWFZ Treaty. 

Through this accession, Timor-Leste reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional peace, security, and stability, and support for ASEAN’s long-standing vision of a Southeast Asia free of nuclear weapons.
