President of Brazil pays a historic visit to the ASEAN Headquarters to strengthen ASEAN-Brazil Partnership

Jakarta, October 24 (AseanAll)  — Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, paid an official visit to the ASEAN Headquarters/ ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on 24 October 2025.

This landmark visit is the first by a Brazilian Head of State underscoring the growing significance of ASEAN–Brazil relations, as both sides continue to advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Lula and his delegation were warmly received by Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, who expressed his appreciation for the historic visit.

During the bilateral meeting, Secretary-General Dr. Kao expressed appreciation for Brazil’s continued commitment to strengthening its cooperation with ASEAN, following the establishment of the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership in 2022. The discussions highlighted cooperation in key areas such as energy, food security, and people-to-people exchanges, and underscored shared priorities, notably in promoting trade and investment, tourism, climate action, and sustainable development, as well as advancing ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future.

Dr. Kao further commended Brazil’s leadership in advancing the interests of the Global South and its active role in the international fora, including its BRICS Presidency this year and the forthcoming hosting of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in November 2025.

As part of his visit, President Lula toured the ASEAN Gallery, which showcases the history, culture, and achievements of the ASEAN Member States. The visit concluded with an exchange of commemorative tokens to mark this historic occasion and reaffirm the shared commitment to building a stronger, forward-looking ASEAN–Brazil partnership.

Brazil acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2011, becoming the first Latin American country to do so. In August 2022, Brazil was formally conferred by ASEAN the status of Sectoral Dialogue Partner, also the first from Latin America. In 2023, Brazil officially established the Mission of Brazil to ASEAN, marking it as the first and, to date, the only ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner to establish a dedicated mission to ASEAN, to underscore its commitment to strengthen relations and cooperation with ASEAN.
