Chinese Premier Li Qiang Meets with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

(AseanAll)  — On the evening of September 2, 2025, Chinese Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025 and events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

Li Qiang said that during World War II, the people of China and Malaysia fought side by side, both making significant contributions to safeguarding world peace and development. As the world enters a new period of turbulence and transformation, China and Malaysia should strengthen unity and cooperation, defend the outcomes of the victory of World War II and the post-war international order, and safeguard the common interests of both countries, the region, and the world. President Xi Jinping held a meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, reaching important common understandings on deepening bilateral relations. China is ready to further enhance strategic communication with Malaysia, continue firm mutual support on issues concerning each other's core interests, continuously expand cooperation across various fields, and work for in-depth and substantial progress in the building of a high-level strategic China–Malaysia community with a shared future.

Li Qiang pointed out that China is ready to seek greater synergy of development strategies with Malaysia, better leverage complementary advantages, and achieve higher-level win-win cooperation. Both sides should steadily advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, consolidate the momentum of bilateral trade growth, launch negotiations on upgrading the investment agreement as soon as possible, deepen cooperation in infrastructure, artificial intelligence, new energy and other fields, accelerate the construction of key projects such as the "Two Countries, Twin Parks" and the East Coast Rail Link, and promote the mutually embedded and integrated development across supply, industrial, value, data, and talent chains. China is ready to import more quality products from Malaysia. Both sides should further facilitate mutual visits between the two peoples, and strengthen cooperation in education, tourism, sports, media, think tanks, and other areas of people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China appreciates Malaysia's proactive role as the rotating chair of ASEAN this year and stands ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with Malaysia within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, jointly promote the high-quality implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and safeguard multilateralism and free trade.

Anwar Ibrahim said that by hosting events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, China manifests its commitment to safeguarding lasting world peace and promoting international fairness and justice.

Noting that China is a trustworthy partner and friend of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim said that Malaysia is willing to work with China to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries, deepen political mutual trust, seek greater synergy of development strategies, continuously advance the construction of major projects, and expand cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure construction, artificial intelligence, communications and other fields. Taking the mutual visa exemption agreement between the two countries as an opportunity, both sides will deepen cooperation in tourism and other areas related to people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Malaysia supports the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) put forth by Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the GGI is an important measure by China to address global challenges and defend multilateralism, and has great significance for reforming and improving the global governance system. Malaysia is willing to strengthen multilateral communication and coordination with China and firmly supports China in joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
