Dili, July 2 (AseanAll) — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, participated in the celebration of the 248th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, held at the US Embassy in Dili. On the occasion, he extended warm congratulations to the American people and reaffirmed the deep, long-standing friendship and cooperation between Timor-Leste and the United States.
During his speech, the Head of State welcomed the new US Chargé d’Affaires, Bruce Begnell, and highlighted the essential role of the United States as a solid partner, from the times of the struggle for independence through to the national reconstruction process.
Ramos-Horta underlined the consistent bipartisan support from the US Congress and successive administrations, considering it fundamental for Timor-Leste’s institutional and democratic development. He also praised the concrete impact of US cooperation programs, with special mention of the US Navy Seabees, who have built over 100 schools in the country, and the valuable work of the Peace Corps volunteers.
The President fondly recalled his personal commitment to advocating for the continuity of these programs, which represent a solid physical presence and a lasting commitment from the United States to Timor-Leste.
In closing, the President expressed his gratitude for the continuous support and wished the new Chargé d’Affaires success, adding humorously that he would do everything to make his tenure in Timor-Leste as pleasant as possible.
