President of Maldives pays courtesy call on President of Singapore

Singapore, June 30 (AseanAll) —  President of Maldives Dr Mohamed Muizzu paid a courtesy call on Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, on the afternoon of 30 June 2025 in Singapore, according to the president's Office of Maldives.

The call commenced with President Shanmugaratnam expressing his pleasure and appreciation for President Dr Muizzu undertaking the ongoing state visit, coinciding with the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Dr Muizzu, in turn, conveyed his gratitude to President Shanmugaratnam and the Government of Singapore for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended during the visit.

During the call, the two leaders reflected on the 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore, affirming their commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation. They highlighted the enduring people-to-people ties and discussed avenues to revitalise mutually beneficial initiatives in areas such as training and education, sustainable energy production from renewable sources, and infrastructure development.

The discussion also touched on enhancing the fisheries sector in the Maldives and pursuing efforts to diversify the economy beyond traditional tourism.

Following the call, President Dr Muizzu presented President Shanmugaratnam with a commemorative book chronicling the milestones in Maldives–Singapore relations over the past five decades, since the formal establishment of diplomatic ties on February 20, 1975.
