Bangkok, July 1 (AseanAll) — On June 30, 2025, Thai Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukul Prueksanusak disclosed that the Government congratulated 5 Thai universities for being ranked within top 100 on Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025 based on their progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Overall, out of 2,526 universities from 130 countries/territories, Chulalongkorn University and Chiang Mai University ranked 44th, Mahidol University and Thammasat University ranked 64th, and Walailak University ranked 93rd.
This success demonstrates commitment and capacity of Thai higher education institutions, which include their administrators, lecturers, personnel, and all students, to drive forward UN-SDGs to the global recognition. It also reflects an important role of Thai universities on sustainable development endeavor, both in terms of education, research, and academic services, as well as management that takes into account social, economic, and environmental impacts. This is also in line with the Government’s policy to promote higher education institutions as key mechanism in the nation’s sustainable and competitiveness development. The Government stands ready to continue to support capacity building of the Thai universities in a bid for them to create positive impacts on the society and country in all dimensions.
In terms of each SDG, Thai universities ranked among other global universities are as follows:
SDG 1: Ends poverty in all its forms everywhere: Prince of Songkhla University (32nd)
SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture: Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) (18th)
SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages: Mahidol University (3rd)
SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all: Chiang Mai University (17th)
SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls: Walailak University (1st)
SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all: King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (44th)
SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all: Prince of Songkhla University
According to the Deputy Government Spokesperson, the Government commits to promote Thai education development on par with the standard of world-class universities to enable the new generations to join in the country sustainable development endeavor and gender equality promotion. The rankings are Thailand’s pride and are hoped to inspire other universities to achieve excellence in sustainable development in the future.
