(AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, calls on the Partido Democrático (PD) to better prepare its cadres for the generational transition that will occur in the coming years. In this regard, Ramos-Horta defended the continuity of the modernization process through the promotion of various training programs aimed at middle and senior-level cadres, taking into account the growing complexity of today’s world.

These statements were made during the speech delivered by Ramos-Horta at the ceremony celebrating the 24th anniversary of the founding of the PD (June, 2001– June, 2025), which took place at the party’s national headquarters in Dili on June 14, 2025.

The Head of State once again emphasized the importance of the PD taking into consideration the international agenda, especially when assuming governmental responsibilities. President  highlighted that cooperation with other countries will be fundamental for Timor-Leste’s development and that the country could benefit from its integration into ASEAN, using it as a platform to promote its image in the world and strengthen bilateral relations with other nations.

Finally, the President and Nobel Peace Laureate expressed his admiration for the PD’s perseverance throughout 24 years of existence, despite the internal challenges faced. President also recalled that 24 years ago, courageously participated in the event that publicly marked the creation of the party, defending the need for a new political force focused on the future and on strengthening Timorese democracy, as an alternative in the national development process.

Addressing the party’s President, Mariano Asanami Sabino, the structure members, and all founders, Ramos-Horta praised the leadership characterized by wisdom and sympathy, and called for better internal organization, with greater discipline and active participation in the party’s programs and activities.
