Timor-Leste President Accepts Invitation to Speak on Gender Equality at UN Forum in New York

Dili, June 12(AseanAll)  — The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, J. Ramos-Horta, received on June 12, 2025 at the Presidential Palace the Secretary of State for Equality (SEI), Elvira Sousa Carvalho. During the meeting, the Secretary of State invited the Head of State to deliver the keynote message at a side event of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, which will take place in New York.

Scheduled for July 14, the event will highlight “Timor-Leste’s model for coordinated prevention and response to gender-based violence,” directly contributing to the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, Gender Equality.

The meeting also addressed other SEI initiatives, including efforts to prevent sexual harassment in workplaces, educational institutions and public services, as well as the continued development of legislation aimed at protecting domestic workers. 

Ramos-Horta reaffirmed his strong commitment to these fundamental initiatives, emphasizing the importance of promoting equality and protecting the rights of all citizens throughout the territory.
