(AseanAll) — Laos and Japan have elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during a landmark meeting between Lao Vice President Pany Yathotou and Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko of Japan, according to Lao News Agency KPL.

The meeting took place on November 18,2025, marking the Princess’s first official overseas visit.
Princess Aiko's trip coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan, as well as the 60th anniversary of the arrival of JICA volunteers in the country. Pany described the visit as historic, reflecting the deepening cooperation and goodwill between the two nations.
The two sides reviewed their longstanding partnership, which was previously upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in 2015. Pany emphasized the value of Japan’s support, particularly in socio-economic development, human resource training, and poverty reduction initiatives that have benefited communities across Laos.
She also praised ongoing cooperation between the Lao and Japanese Red Cross societies, notably in improving blood safety and first-aid capacity nationwide.

Princess Aiko expressed her appreciation for the warm welcome and commended Lao Vice President Pany, who received Japan’s First Class Order of the Precious Crown in 2023 for her contributions to bilateral ties. The Princess voiced optimism that the new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership would strengthen collaboration in tourism, culture, energy, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Following the talks, Pany hosted a traditional Baci ceremony and welcome dinner to honor Princess Aiko and her delegation.
The visit reaffirms both countries' commitment to expanding cooperation while celebrating decades of friendship and mutual support.
